We have taken the character of Joan of Arc, an emblematic personality represented many times in theatre, cinema and literature, and we have asked what lasting impression remains with us of the powerful saga of this unique warrior of world history. To this question we have applied all our resources: actors and creators from various countries, with different techniques and ways of looking at art and the world, with our polemics, discoveries and disappointments, with our instincts and above all, with a common goal.

We have posed various premises and challenges: a stage divided in two sections facing each other, an interaction between the actor and spectator and then the spectator and the actor, seeking to break down the normal barriers between acting and offstage reality with a constant swing between nationalities and historical periods, where the past and present walk hand in hand in open dialogue.

We found it easier when we finally abandoned our initial inclination to change the face of history, on discovering that its message, although devastating, is at the same time simple, subtle and profoundly relevant. With this in mind we have tried to emphasize its moderating influence which affects us all. Joan is an extreme and ever relevant example, an invitation to listen to our inner voice, to become warriors and cross over our limitations, overcoming our only real enemy: ourselves.

Claudio Valdés Kuri

A journey through the most important and well known experiences of Joan of Arc: the visit to her feudal lord, her entrance to the court and her interview with the Dauphin, the taking of Orleans, the coronation of Charles VII, her falling into the hands of the enemy army, her trial and her passion. However, in this version, the story of Joan is just the vertebral column, from which little by little the centre of interest opens out to include each and every one of the participants in the event, both the actors and the public.

Even there, where you do not look, where you do not listen,

Or there, where you do not stop on your way¿

There, the trumpet will sound and it will call you;

Your heart will follow

because it is no more than the sound of your own voice.

The internal battle is a match already won,

all that remains is to acknowledge it.

Your inner voice is the only one to heed¿ can there be any other?

Would you die in defense of it?

Should you live listening to your own voice

or merely survive paraphrasing that of the others?

Live or survive, that is YOUR choice.

Give all your attention and your intention to the following words:

NOTHING you fear really exists

Therefore, can you trust?

Teatro de Ciertos Habitantes works under simple principles that provoke ample consequences. Each project is approached considering risks, specific questioning and an open debate. Once these risks and questions have been duly solved, the project is concluded permitting the group to concentrate on another project. We consider that the element of change is the prime instrument for the development of the artistic spirit. Research work is emphasized for each project, avoiding as much as possible the repetition of former presentation models and previous discoveries. At the same time, each presentation is ¿polished¿ during long processes to attain maturity, nourished by the experience accumulated, pertaining to direction, production, creativity and interpreters. Reliance on scenic work is placed entirely upon a multidisciplinary artist, actor-musician-dancer, who will use all of his abilities to the utmost.
